One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish; the Patrons of Maricopa Public Library gathered to echo the famous words of Dr. Seuss on Tuesday March 2, 2017. Parents and children were encouraged to visit the library and partake in fun games, a live magic show, and of course a picture with the Cat in the Hat himself.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Dr. Seuss’s encouraging words not only inspired generations of past readers but the NEA’s Read Across America is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place every year, in honor of the writer himself, on his very own birthday. Theodor Seuss Geisel, famously known to the world as Dr. Seuss, was an American writer, cartoonist, animator, book publisher, and artist who was born on the second of March in 1904. Dr. Seuss would go on to publish more than sixty books throughout the span of his career.

The best part of the Maricopa Public Library’s celebration is that along with the NEA’s, it’s an annual celebration. This year’s event is the seventh time that the library has honored Dr. Seuss and celebrated the presence of books in the lives of our youth. “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” Next year, choose the Maricopa Public Library and celebrate not only all the great literature Dr. Seuss has created but all the great literature we are surrounded by.
