Over the Rainbow

February 13, 2017
Hello everyone, it’s a new semester and I’m Rei! I’ll be taking over Over the Rainbow for Destiny who has graduated. I haven’t come out to my parents so that’s why I’ll be going by a pen name and it makes me more comfortable. I sadly haven’t been able to come out to many that I identify as agender, which is on the non-binary spectrum, and that I prefer they/them pronouns. Hopefully, one day I’ll be able to do so with confidence!
Being agender means that I don’t feel like I am any type of gender. Although I go by they/them pronouns, that may not be the case for others. If you ever meet a person who identifies as a certain gender, or no gender at all, make sure to ask them what pronouns they’re comfortable with! It can take some getting used to, but the effort is what means the most.
In future columns, I want to talk about how representation matters in all kinds of media and how it can affect us. I also want to answer questions others have who are not able to ask friends or family themselves. If you have any questions or want me to talk about a certain topic, just email me at [email protected]! I’m hoping that these columns will help others with their own identities or maybe help someone that they know of.
