Hello, My Name Is

Hector Castellanos, Cactus Writer

Dr. Christina Marin is a wonderful, vibrant new teacher who recently joined the Central Arizona College Community. Christina is also the new Theater director. At the age of ten, Christina fell in love with the art of theatre. Her love for the craft only deepened as she grew older, and she was able to learn more about it in high school. She majored in theatre in college, and it helped define who she became: a director, an actor, an educator, and a workshop facilitator.

Christina originally taught at New York University and moved to Arizona because she earned her doctoral studies in Theatre with a concentration in Theatre for and with youth at Arizona State University (from 2000-2005). Christina’s work is focused more to the Theater of the Oppressed. Presenting issues through a poetic and anatomical dialogue that motivates conversations about social change and topics from both the past and present. One of these examples is what Christina likes to call the best experience of her career. She directed Ruben Amavizca’s play, Las Mujeres de Juárez for Teatro Bravo in Phoenix.

Christina explained, “This play exposed the human rights issue of femicide taking place in the border towns of Mexico where globalization and impunity put women’s lives at risk.” Christina says she was very proud of the production and the talented people she was given the opportunity to work with. She also earned an AriZoni award for the fantastic production.

Christina loves the desert and the weather here, but it is also a place where she believes the people have a warmer spirit. Christina also enjoys the diversity mentioning how, “People here come from so many different backgrounds.” As a theatre artist, she knows how that helps paint a more interesting picture when it comes to her craft.

Christina is working on a new, upcoming production for our very own CAC fall musical Once on This Island, which will run October 28, 29, & 30 at the Pence Center for the Visual and Performing Arts.
