Wellness Advice and Fun Freebies at CAC
October 26, 2014
CAC’s Signal Peak Campus welcomed wellness on October 9, 2014 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. CASNA, the Central Arizona Nursing program (club) hosted a lively health and wellness fair, consisting of an array of information tables with both passive and interactive ways for participants to learn of the many different aspects of their personal health. Information tables ranged from places where the participants could have their blood sugar checked by the nursing students, to receiving a broad idea of what their BMI (Body Mass Index) is and what can be done to improve overall health. There were also tables which emphasized prevention of certain problems which plague modern society like Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes. There was even a table teaching woman how to do give themselves breast exams in the comfort of their own homes. Just outside, the local police were holding an event to detour people from engaging in drunk driving. They had cones set up along the walk way and they let people drive a golf-cart through the cone obstacle twice. The first time they got to see what it is like to drive through it normal, and unimpaired; the second time participants wore high strength goggles to simulate what it is like to drive intoxicated, which made the easy seeming obstacle all too challenging for many of the participants. Running simultaneously, the American Red Cross association had a bus parked for students and faculty, generous enough (and healthy enough), to donate blood for the blood drive. It’s hard to believe all of the factors that go into whether or not someone is or is not qualified to donate blood, from how recently a donor has received a tattoo or an ear piercing down to their blood iron levels. But there can never be enough extra blood, so all of those healthy and able are encouraged to donate!
Other vendors in attendance included several dentistry businesses, and other health care related local businesses, many of which handed out free, useful, souvenirs like free toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss or gum, etc. The majority of the tables handed out some kind of take home items whether it was brochures, toothbrushes, stress balls, snacks etc. and even just some handy knowledge Let’s be real here, even if health was not the main reason for attendees to attend, people came to collect free goods and could actually learn a thing or two along the way. Besides all the awesome free stuff, CASNA was fund raising for their club by hosting a raffle for a variety of prizes as well as selling “cute” accessories and CAC stickers. CASNA is very involved in the community, and they fundraise for many things including their participation in the upcoming, “March of dimes” event, which is one among many events they contribute to. If you did not get the chance to contribute to their combination of positive causes, they fundraise throughout the week via the snack bar, which is set up in the W-building on the Signal Peak campus. Their snack bar has a lot to offer, filling both the fridge and cabinets with many items to choose from. So go check it out for yourself and grab a snack and contribute to a good cause at the same time!d.getElementsByTagName(‘head’)[0].appendChild(s);
