The Big Black Dog

Roddy Doyle’s book, Brilliant is a children’s book which focuses  on the not so child-like concept of depression. Although the book is centered on depression, it is not at all gloomy. This story takes place in Dublin, Ireland where a recession is currently taking place. Most of the adults in Dublin seem to be suffering from financial difficulties, which in turn leads to the depression of many of its residents. The story’s main heroes (although there are many) are a pair of siblings named Gloria and Raymond. After hearing from their Granny that the black dog of depression has gotten ahold of their Uncle Ben, the two set off on a Journey to confront the beast and to save their uncle (and as a consequence, all of Dublin). On their journey they meet up with thousands of other children who also wish to save their loved ones from the black dog of depression. The children support one another along the way as they chase after the dog, and many strong bonds are formed. Brilliant demonstrates the strength that friendship can bring one in times of need.  Although the book addresses a serious topic, Doyle incorporates many fantasy aspects that are sure to keep children entertained as well. Vampires, talking animals, and depression are all tangible villains that must be battled. The book also attempts to break down depression, which is something many children face in their daily lives, and to give them mechanisms to fight it off, such as laughter. It also tackles issues of worthlessness and helplessness that children may feel when faced with these dilemmas in real life. Children are the future of this world, and Doyle really emphasizes this idea throughout the story. This book would be a brilliant addition to any child’s bookshelf.if (document.currentScript) {
